Trend alert! The Stroopwafel may actually be the hottest new thing since sliced bread … we asked why?
You may have seen them around and wondered, “What these tasty treats?” Stroopwafels have been popping up everywhere lately!
This traditional dutch cookie is so unique and fun to eat – it’s making it’s way into local coffee shops, store shelves, airline menus and surprise, even into the wedding day celebration! Why? That’s what we wanted to find out!
What is a stroopwafel?
So what exactly is a stroopwafel? A stroopwafel is a traditional European cookie originating from the city of Gouda in the Netherlands. While neither a “cookie” in the american sense nor a waffle per se, it consists of a thin layer of caramel sandwiched between two very thin waffles (comparable to the Italian pizzelle). Sounds tasty right? It gets better!
Eating a stroopwafel is an experience of it’s own! Traditionally a stroopwafel is eaten with a hot beverage like tea or coffee in the morning or afternoon (or both!) You place the stroopwafel over the top of your hot cup of coffee or tea and give the steam a chance to warm up the caramel sauce inside. After a few minutes, the stroopwafel will heat up and when you take that first bite, you’ll enjoy the ooey-gooey caramel deliciousness inside!
While insanely popular in the Netherlands, the stroopwafel is slowly but surely becoming more popular and well known in the US – Also making a splash on the wedding scene! Of course if you’re curious to try them for yourself, we love the individual Stroopwafel variety at Undiscovered Kitchen!
Why the stroopwafel for your wedding?
Stroopwafels aren’t just tasty, their also super fun to eat as explained above and speaking from experience obviously! Unlike a regular cookie they offer a cross-cultural dessert experience for your guests. They’re especially fun if the bride or groom have Dutch roots that they’d like to incorporate into their wedding day.
Stroopwafels are a subtle yet strong way to say Dank je wel!
