Entering the world as newlyweds deserves some EXTRA special attention. If you’re looking for a grand entrance that’ll shock and surprise your guests at the wedding reception – consider a flashmob!
We love flash mobs because they’re fun, unexpected, and a great way to get your guests and wedding party involved in making the wedding reception unbelievably fun – not to mention they leave quite an impression! Below we’ll break down the process of coordinating a wedding flashmob with tips to keep it fun and engaging for everyone involved.
“Putting together a successful flash mob dance takes coordination, skill, practice, and months of prep,” says the Huffington Post. Before you begin to plan your own, check out some of our favorite wedding flash mobs below, as well as our “Wedding Flash Mobs” Pinterest board for even more inspiration!
Tips when planning your wedding flash mob:
- Most importantly: HAVE FUN!
- Check out your wedding reception venue in person before you start planning so you know how much room you have to work with and how many people to include.
- Keep the dance moves simple! Your friends aren’t professional dancers and they might already be nervous, so the simpler the better. Simple moves will also be easier to remember.
- Invite everyone you’d like to see participate, but don’t make it mandatory.
How to plan a flash mob:
Flashmob’s are all about spontaneity and surprise but in order to pull it off, there are some important steps to follow:
Step 1: CHOOSE YOUR SONG Do you want something upbeat or something laid back? Or maybe some oldies? Consider making a mashup of a few of your favorite songs. Garageband can help even a novice become a pro at mixing music on the computer. “The song should pop, it should be recognizable by the crowd you have at your event. Choose a song that is familiar, fun and inclusive. You want people to feel a part of the flash mob even if they are just mouthing the words to the song,” says First Dance Vancouver.
Step 2: INVITE Choose who you want to invite to participate in the flashmob – making sure to let them know it’s a secret! Depending on your wedding reception venue, it can potentially be as large or small as you want it to be. Consider the option of limiting the flashmob to your wedding party to act as your official entrance, or perhaps as a secret from the bride and groom as an extra layer of surprise.
Step 3: DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF Always remember the purpose of your flashmob. Flash mobs should always be about having FUN and being spontaneous! They are meant to spice up your wedding reception and create an unforgettable experience with the people you love most. It’s inevitable that you may have some participants who fail to practice, but when that happens, just let it go and try not get too caught up in the small details. Although it might not be perfect, it will create lasting memories and one hell of an awesome video!
Step 4: PRACTICE Plan to host a few scheduled dance practices for local participants. For anyone who is not local, make a step by video step tutorial for them to learn and practice with. We recommend making one video that slowly breaks down the choreography and another at tempo. Note: you can easily upload and share videos on youtube via a private setting so only your friends/family have access to watch.
Step 5: STAGGER Remember to stagger when people actually join in on the dance floor. A flashmob is most impressive when you see it build. One minute someone is casually drinking a glass of wine and the next you see them moon walking on the dance floor!
Pro planning tip: If you have people who want to participate but don’t have the time to learn a longer routine, have them join in at the very end for just a few eight counts – it’s a win win for everyone!
Step 6: VIDEO If there is a videographer at the wedding, make sure they know the flashmob is happening ahead of time so they can capture every minute!
Step 7: HAVE FUN! On the big day, let any ideas of perfection go and just enjoy the spontaneity of whatever happens!
