Having trouble choosing between first dance songs? Look no further!
Choosing first dance songs may seem like a relatively simple task, but once you and your fiance realize how many amazing choices there are, it might prove to be more difficult than expected to agree on one. “For many couples, it’s the thing they sweat the most,” says DJ Heather Femia.
Need some help? Check out our list of 10 tips that will help you find the perfect song for your first dance!
1. Play Your Favorite Movie Soundtrack
First dance songs should reflect who you are as a couple, so why not look to some of your favorite films for inspiration? If a certain scene or happily-ever-after moment stands out to both of you, borrow that moment and make it your own! It’s sweet, it’s sentimental, and it’ll definitely be memorable for both of you!
2. Pick A Song That Is Timeless
First dances songs should be timeless; In other words, you don’t want to risk getting sick of hearing it. A timeless song will ensure you’ll enjoy listening to it at every anniversary and special occasion at forty, fifty, and SIXTY years from now!
3. Make Sure You Both Authentically Agree!
This should go without saying, but first dance songs should be a mutual decision, agreed upon by both of you! You shouldn’t have to force your love to dance to a song he/she doesn’t like – it’ll inevitably make the moment less special and add a level of resentment you don’t want to exist. Make sure it’s a special moment and song you can both enjoy equally.
4. Choose A Song That Reminds You Of A Special Event
Typical first dance songs have sentimental value, but that can really come from anything: your first date, a fun concert you both went to, your first holiday together, etc. Consider any songs, even those unexpected, that stick out to both of you and take them into consideration for your first dance song!
5. Look To Your Favorite Band/Artist
If you’re feeling stumped, turn to a shared favorite band or artist! Consider your favorite song or one that has a message to match the moment. This way you can be sure that it’ll be a song you can enjoy listening to for a long time!
6. Decide On A “Style” or Genre
The key is to narrow down the list! Choosing a style or genre of music is a really easy way to eliminate many first dance songs from your list. Do you want a fun, upbeat song? Or a romantic song? Do you want jazz? Big Band? R&B? The possibilities are endless, but once you decide on a style or genre, it’ll be a lot easier to arrive at a final choice!
7. Consider The Song Length
First dance songs are a performance. You’re essentially performing for your wedding guests – so consider the length of your performance. Three minutes is about the maximum any guest can hold their attention on you while you dance. You can ask your DJ to cut the music or agree on a signal when to fade. Alternatively, consider opening the dance floor to your guests halfway through and have them join in the fun! Figuring out what length you want your song to last will definitely help you narrow down your choices.
8. Look To The Past For Inspiration
A lot of couples like to use the first dance songs their family members or friends used. Choosing a song that a family member used is not only a special way to honor them, but also a creative way to incorporate something old!
9. Make Sure You Can Actually Dance To It
Let’s face it, not everyone knows how to dance. Your first dance song can be the perfect opportunity to break out your fabulous dance moves if you know what you’re doing. However, if you’re not gifted in the dancing department, keep that in mind when you choose your song. Maybe something slower would be better or less formal or something you know you can just let loose have fun together to.
10. Make Your Own Mash Up!
If all else fails and you’re stuck choosing between multiple first dance songs, mash them up! If you want to do something a little different or combine a couple of your favorite songs, this is the perfect way to do it. You can even switch between slow, and upbeat dance tracks if you can’t decide between a style. Plus, it’s really entertaining for your wedding guests!
The first dance is a tradition through and through, and the pressure to pick the perfect song is inevitable. It’s the first dance of married life, after all. At the end of the day, no matter the song, what matters is that you’re happy with your choice!
